Shou sugi ban, also called yaki sugi, is a traditional Japanese method for finishing cedar wood. It waterproofs the wood and protects it from insect damage.

Our shou sugi ban style picture frames are burned using modern torches, and we often use pine, but the beautiful finish it achieves remains the same.
